Smart Water Detectives:
A STEM Student Ambassador Programme

This project was funded by HKU Knowledge Exchange Office and applies the technologies developed under the Smart Water Auditing for Sustainable Hong Kong research project to a school setting. Participants will learn about the technological know-how of a customised IoT-based device, called the “Smart Meter Analyser” (SMAN), as well as data analysis techniques. Students, through training, will be able to study water usage data purposefully collected by SMAN in their schools and design a water conservation scheme accordingly. Project investigators hope to induce notable changes in the participants’ attitudes towards water resources and their water use behavior.

Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF) Student Ambassador Scheme

Student ambassadors have gained knowledge on water governance and resource management through participating in project workshops and receiving training on installing, utilising, and maintaining an IoT-based device called the “Smart Meter Analyser” (SMAN). Data on water use were collected by the SMAN in the participating students’ home; and water usage data were made available to participants via the project’s mobile website. Participating students, together with their family members, implemented water conservation plans. The results and experiences of such action plans were shared by the participants at the concluding session of the project.
